Since 1918, the University of Edinburgh Business School is offering business education and an MBA degree since 1980. It has close ties to the University of Edinburgh which received its royal charter in 1582. Since 1984, the business school also offers a part-time MBA. It is accredited by EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB.

The school inhabits numerous research centers and institutes and offers a wide range of business-oriented degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Its strongest focus lies within the research fields of accounting and finance, entrepreneurship and innovation, management science and business economics, marketing, organization studies and strategy.

Some selected rankings show #3 for female students in Financial Times 2017 (Global MBA Rankings), #35 in Financial Times Masters in Finance Pre-experience ranking 2017 and #74 in The Economist MBA rankings 2016.

Notable alumni include John Hardman Moore, economist, Yrjö Jahnsson Award winner in 1999, Sir James Mirrlees, economist, Nobel laureate, and Kenneth E. Boulding, economist, John Bates Clark Medal winner in 1949
